Gemmill lane is growing. In the past year, this little offshoot from the far more popular Club Street has become home to not one but two good places to go for food (and drink). People started to take notice of this little lane when Luke’s moved just under a year ago, and I think the addition of Club Street Social will only do great things for the area.

The first comment I got on my insta photo was “It looks like NY!” – coming from veteran New Yorker, Ellie D, I’d say that’s pretty high praise. As the WSJ put it “the décor is more East Village than Southeast Asia,” and I love what they’ve done with the space! I was somewhat surprised that the space used to house a “lapsap tio” – you’d never guess from the high, loft-like ceilings, exposed brick walls, gorgeous marble long bar, and the huge amount of light that the glass panes let in.

Trying to get a seat there on a Thursday or Friday night can be very challenging – so I’d recommend dropping by on a Sunday afternoon for a mid afternoon tipple or a pre-dinner drink. And if you’re feeling peckish do order something light (like the delicious crostini topped with goat cheese, honey and thyme pictured left), so far nothing has disappointed, and they even offer all day breakfast.

The cocktail menu is created and curated by a veteran of that famed NY establishment, PDT, and in a unique twist, they’ve decided not to name the drinks. Instead, they’re numbered from one to seven (#1, #2, #3), and under each they’ve listed the description. Some highlights? #7. Cognac, bacon, dates and walnut – Bacon and cognac make a very good combination, kind of like breakfast in a glass. Then there’s a Jameson with Earl Grey which I love (#5 I think), and an Italian vermouth, Rye and Vegemite (#4) for the more adventurous among us. If you’re there to share, I can attest to the goodness of the spiked pitcher that contains gin, lemongrass, galangal and pineapple – refreshing and perfect for a sweltering Sunday afternoon.

This is one of those places where you won’t mind being seated at the bar – they’re the best seats in the house.
